In July 2007, the Framework for Antigonish as a Leading Sustainable Community was completed following extensive participation of, and consultation with, local and provincial stakeholders. On-going consultation with provincial stakeholders has included representatives from the Department of Environment and Labour, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. The Project team – a community-based steering committee of twelve volunteers representing four pillars, Economy, Environment, Society and Culture, and two Antigonish Town Councillors – has recognized that the Antigonish area has the opportunity to be a pilot community in Nova Scotia for implementing a comprehensive sustainability framework. The comprehensiveness of our framework would allow us to be a leader in sustainability in Canada. The framework can be transferred, with appropriate modifications, to other communities in Nova Scotia and across Canada. It draws upon various proven models including The Natural Step (Canada’s) Framework, The Five Capitals Model and The Ecological Footprint. Sustainability initiatives in the Antigonish area continue to gain momentum with more than 20 organizations including businesses and institutions having expressed interest in becoming Early Adopters. Along with 14 other partners in Atlantic Canada, the Town of Antigonish has already signed the Atlantic Canada Charter.
Phase Two of the Project, the implementation of the framework, is expected to begin in September, 2007. The project is important for the business community in the Antigonish area as it seeks to aid organizations with developing sustainability action plans.
