Business from Minutes

·         Sports Field Update

Ms T. Cameron, Recreation Director, advised that they are applying for funding through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Both Corporate and community fundraising has begun. Discussion took place over using the Memorandum of Understanding for ST.F.X. turf field as an addendum in our funding application.

The trail connecting Town and County will not occur during the initial stages of the project however the trail within the Town boundaries will go forward.

·         Olympic Torch Update

Ms. T. Cameron reported that the Olympic Torch Committee has the ability to apply for $15,000.00 in funding from the Federal Government. Ms. I. MacLeod has agreed to Chair the Committee.

·         Wellness Program:

The clinical visit for the Town of Antigonish has been canceled due to low registration.

·         Columbus Field

Ms. T. Cameron inspected the field with project manager Mr. K. Riley. It was felt by both parties that even with the Town staff rolling the fields to level it off, more work by MacNeils must be done in order to bring it up to standards.  Mr. K. Riley assured T. Cameron that he would deal immediately with the matter.

·         Earth Day:

Attendance was low due to inclement weather.

·         Summer Camp

The Town has been approved for a grant for our summer camps.  There are two instructor positions available for the summer camps. The jobs have been posted in The Casket this week.

·         Arborist

The Request for Proposals has gone out and will be in The Casket this week.

Correspondence

No correspondence received.

Other Business

·         Equipment Shed

Ms. T. Cameron received a quote for smoke damage to the equipment shed in the amount of $2100.00. It is not in the budget to have the shed repaired. Also, if groups are to store supplies in this shed, they need to have insurance on their equipment.

·         Active Transportation

Upcoming Active Transportation workshop, June 15 & 16, 2009, featuring speaker Mike Haynes, will be offered to the community and municipal representatives on June 15, 2009, and then to potential municipal committees on June 16, 2009.

·         June Recreation Month

Ms. T. Cameron is planning a Run, Walk and Roll on June 13, 2009. Families will be invited to walk around the Landing and then meet at the Columbus Field for more activities.

·         Whidden’s Playground

It was agreed that the Recreation Capital will be used this year on Whidden’s Playground. Ms. T. Cameron will look into a sign for closing playgrounds in residential areas at 9:00 PM, repair of the existing fence, a new bench and possible upgrades to the existing equipment. Youth using the area after those hours will be dealt with by the RCMP.
