Sustainability

The Town of Antigonish is actively engaged with sustainability initiatives through the collective participation of our community, businesses and organizations. In 1987, the United Nations adapted a definition for Sustainable Development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

We are committed to the four pillars of sustainability that make up the foundation for a progressive community which values the preservation of a high quality of life and well-being of our citizens, celebrating our heritage and culture with our visitors, protecting our natural capital, and working collectively and peacefully to advance prosperity.

Read below to learn about the sustainability initiatives that the Town of Antigonish is involved with.

Antigonish 2020 Foresight Process

Antigonish 2020 Foresight is essentially a community visioning process into the future - an initiative intended to provide our community with the tools needed to consider our future from a wide viewpoint and to then engage our businesses, institutions, planners, developers, public administrators and the community at large to work towards developing a plan with a set of principles built on community values, and achievable options for action, and the processes to get us there.

Antigonish Sustainable Development

In July 2007, the Framework for Antigonish as a Leading Sustainable Community was released to the public and subsequently, the Antigonish Sustainable Development project was launched. The Framework advances capacity building on sustainability in the community, businesses and organizations.

In November 2007, the Town of Antigonish signed a one-year charter among 20 other local organizations representing with Antigonish Sustainable Development. The purpose of the charter is for local organizations to work collaboratively to advance sustainability within their own organizations and build momentum for other organizations to take on sustainability. Currently, 35 organizations in the Antigonish area are signed on as Adopters. Click on the links below to learn more.

Integrated Community Sustainability Plan

In September 2005, the federal government and Nova Scotia entered into a Municipal Funding Agreement (MFA), which set out the terms and conditions of the Gas Tax Transfer Agreement. This agreement includes the development of Integrated Community Sustainability Plans (ICSP) by municipalities.

The Town of Antigonish intends to have the ICSP finalized by December 31, 2008. Community visions and priorities that were identified through the Antigonish 2020 Foresight process have been incorporated into the ICSP, as well as the priorities identified by Town Council and Staff. A second draft of the ICSP has been approved by Town Council at a meeting on October 20th, 2008. Click on the below links for more information.

The Antigonish Emergency Fuel Fund

The Antigonish Emergency Fuel Fund (AEFF) has been launched as part of the Tackling Heat Poverty Initiative. The Heat Poverty Initiative is a joint initiative of the Town, County and host of organizations. A Fuel Fund Working Group established the Emergency Fuel Fund to address the immediate need for assistance with home heating. It is a mechanism to support individuals and families that do not have adequate income to heat their homes during the winter season. The Heat Poverty Initiative is a joint initiative of the Town, County and host of local organizations. A Committee oversees the development, fundraising and other operations components of this fund. For more information, please e-mail: antigonishfuelfund@gmail.com

A longer-term strategy will also be needed to tackle the general trend of rising energy costs. The Town, County and a host of individuals and organizations are involved in developing a longer term strategy.
