NOTICE TO RESIDENTS
On behalf of the Water Utility for the Town of Antigonish, I am pleased to advise that through project funding of all three levels of government (federal, provincial, municipal), we are embarking on the completion of metering all our water utility customers.
This project will see the installation of approximately 1100 - 5/8" meters at customer locations who are currently on a flat rate billing system. This work will provide for a fully metered water system and allow for a fairer assessment of water consumption and related charges.
The work will be undertaken by Neptune Technology Group with local contractors being used where possible and in co-ordination with Town of Antigonish Water Utility staff. Work is anticipated to span approximately 23 weeks and be completed by the end of September 2009.
Letters will be sent to the affected Water Utility customers on an area by area basis to set up appointments and to answer frequently asked questions. Re-contact with property owners will also occur by follow up letters and door to door canvassing by the installation teams. The installation work should take approximately one hour. We encourage you to schedule your installation as soon as possible and ask for your assistance and co-operation as the work is undertaken.
It is important to note that, as part of the Water Utility’s “permit to operate”, it is required to have a cross-connection prevention program in place to further assist with preventing contamination of our treated water with untreated water. The installation of a backflow preventer (BFP), a plumbing device on the service line entering the property, stops potential flow reversal from a property, due to a change in the operating pressure of the water system. It is the responsibility of the property owner to purchase and have a BFP installed and maintained. The water meters that are being installed will be equipped with a recording register that will allow for detection of any flow reversal. Further information can be found by calling our HOTLINE at 863-4949.
In closing, I want to thank you for your co-operation in this matter. A fully metered water system will allow for greater management of this very important resource.
Sincerely,
Carl Chisholm
Mayor
