The Town of Antigonish is excited to announce the launch of a new fitness program for older adults. Moving and Mingling is a free fitness initiative specifically designed to benefit those 55 years of age or older in the community. This program will connect a certified fitness leader with seniors across various rural settings, encouraging a more active, healthy lifestyle while reducing social isolation.
The program will take place in three key community centers: the John Paul Centre in Antigonish, the St. Andrews Community Centre, and the Arisaig Community Hall. These locations were carefully selected to ensure easy access for seniors from surrounding rural areas, providing them with a comfortable, familiar environment to participate in fitness classes and social activities.
"This program will offer older adults a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with their friends and neighbors while improving their physical health," said Mayor Laurie Boucher. “With a certified fitness leader guiding the sessions and community champions facilitating local engagement, we hope to foster a sense of belonging and improve the well-being of our seniors."
Key features of the program include:
- Live-streamed fitness classes: A certified fitness leader will deliver live exercise sessions tailored to older adults, streamed directly to the community centers. Seniors will participate in the sessions together, fostering both physical and social engagement.
- Accessible locations: The John Paul Centre will welcome participants from Antigonish and surrounding areas, while St. Andrews and Arisaig will serve seniors from nearby rural communities such as Lower South River, Pomquet, Malignant Cove, and Georgeville.
- Social time and refreshments: After the fitness sessions, participants will be invited to stay for refreshments and games providing an additional opportunity to socialize and reduce feelings of isolation.
Classes will take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., followed by social time until noon. The classes on Monday and Friday will be mild chair-stretch classes with the class on Wednesday being for more mobile individuals. All older adults are welcome to join, registration is required.
