Your tax dollars do more than just keep the lights on, they directly support the services, people, and places that make the Town of Antigonish a welcoming and inclusive community. Here's where your money goes:
Provincial Responsibilities
Every time you pay your taxes, a significant portion is mandated to go directly to support services managed at the provincial level. Here's how:
Education Distribution – about 30 cents of every tax dollar
Education is the cornerstone of a thriving community. Nearly a third of your municipal taxes are transferred to support public education, ensuring our schools have the resources they need to serve children and youth in Antigonish.
Regional Library – $38,821
We help fund the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library system, including The People’s Place. It’s a vibrant hub for literacy programs, tech access, cultural events, and community connections.
Equity, Anti-Hate & Anti-Racism Plan – $15,000
We're proud to invest in creating a safer, more inclusive town for all. These funds support education, policy development, and community dialogue that promotes respect and understanding.
Accessibility Improvements – $16,000
As part of a province-wide mandate, all new sidewalks must now be 6 feet wide to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities. Your tax dollars help make our town walkable and inclusive for everyone.
Other Local Services We Fund
These are the day-to-day services that make the Town of Antigonish a safe, healthy, connected, and welcoming place to live.
RCMP Policing Services – $2,095,990
Community safety is our highest priority. This funding supports officers, dispatch, equipment, and ongoing public safety efforts that keep the Town of Antigonish safe.
St. Martha’s Regional Hospital – $35,000
We support the hospital’s work to deliver high-quality healthcare close to home, including upgrades to equipment and facilities.
Fire Department – $783,668
This includes funding for alarm systems, water supply and hydrants, firefighter training, and equipment. The Town has also established a fire truck replacement schedule to ensure timely upgrades.
Housing Accelerator Fund – $474,000
With housing affordability and availability as a top concern, we’re investing in solutions to speed up housing development and meet the needs of current and future residents.
Crossing Guards – $60,484
Keeping kids safe on their way to and from school is non-negotiable. Your tax dollars support trained crossing guards at key intersections across town.
The People’s Place Library – $61,634
Beyond regional library funding, we provide additional direct support for this essential community space, which offers everything from early literacy programming to digital skills training and local history archives.
Antigonish Arena – $75,000
Whether it’s minor hockey, figure skating, or free public skates, the arena is a gathering place that supports youth development and healthy recreation.
Navigator for Healthcare Providers – $30,000
We help fund a dedicated navigator who assists new healthcare professionals in relocating and settling in the Town of Antigonish that boosts our ability to recruit and retain medical talent.
Local Transit – $50,000
Accessible, affordable transit connects people to work, school, and services. This is especially important for seniors, students, and those without access to a car.
Active Living – $25,412
We support wellness through local recreation initiatives, trails, and community fitness programs that encourage movement and connection.
Beautification Projects – $29,000
We invest in the vibrancy of our public spaces from seasonal plantings to sidewalk maintenance. Notably, we proudly support CACL Antigonish through a watering contract, providing inclusive employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. Learn more about CACL.
Marketing Levy – $100,000 revenue
The Town of Antigonish applies a marketing levy to overnight accommodation, meaning visitors help fund tourism initiatives, not local taxpayers. This generates approximately $100,000 annually to promote our community, support local businesses, and create jobs. In contrast, County residents bear the full cost of tourism marketing through their property taxes.
