Progress Continues on Electric Utility Grid Modernization with Local Contractor Awarded Civil Works Contract

Antigonish, NS – June 20, 2025 - The Town of Antigonish is pleased to announce a significant milestone in its Electric Utility Grid Modernization Project. Local company Ron Chisholm Hydro-Seeding Ltd., based in Lower South River, has been awarded the contract to carry out civil works at the site of the Town’s new electrical substation, located off Post Road.

The civil work is a foundational step in preparing the site for the installation of a state-of-the-art 30 MVA substation, which will feature full transformer redundancy. This new substation will serve as the primary entry point to Antigonish’s electric grid and is a cornerstone of the broader modernization effort.

The Grid Modernization Project is a transformative initiative that will see advanced hardware and software systems deployed across the Town to create a more efficient, reliable, and resilient electrical grid. Key benefits of the project include:

  • Reduced frequency and duration of power outages
  • Expanded capacity for cost-effective electrification
  • Greater integration of renewable energy sources
  • Support for the Town’s net-zero emissions goals

This $19.4 million project is being supported in part by a $9.7 million contribution from the Government of Canada through its $4.5 billion Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREP), which was announced on July 2, 2024.

“We’re proud to see local businesses like Ron Chisholm Hydro-Seeding Ltd. contributing to this vital infrastructure project,” said Sean Cameron, Mayor of the Town of Antigonish. “Hiring local not only helps build a stronger community, but it also ensures that the economic benefits of these projects are felt right here at home.”

Residents of the Town of Antigonish will be able to stay up to date on the project’s progress. A dedicated webpage will be launched in July on the Town’s official website at https://www.townofantigonish.ca/projects-initiatives.html, offering regular updates, project details, and information on how the work is advancing toward a cleaner energy future.
