Rooftop view of a planer adding asphalt to a pothole patching project in Antigonish Nova Scotia

After a busy first morning on Main Street, crews from Dexter Construction moved operations to College Street around 3 p.m. to allow for better traffic flow on Main Street during peak commute time.

Here's a look at some of the processes and machinery involved in the pothole patching project.

Wirtgen Milling Machine

Mill Machine College Street

This milling machine travels along existing ashpalt and lifts or grinds it to reveal a level surface beneath.

Sweeper and surface preparation

On the front of this machine is a rotating sweeper that helps remove small pieces of asphalt left by the milling machine.

Planer

Next, the planer comes in to lay fresh asphalt along the section that was milled.

Roller

Finally, a roller will come in (not pictured) to compact the asphalt and make it ready for cars to pass over it, and then the crew can move to the next section of road.

The order of pothole patching planned over the rest of the month of August:

  • Main Street
  • Court Street and College Street (as offshoots of the Main Street sections)
  • Fairview Street
  • Highland Drive
  • Braemore Avenue
  • Hawthorne Street
