ANTIGONISH, July 6, 2026 The Town of Antigonish has awarded the tender for the next phase of the Active Transportation (AT) Trail to B.D. Clifton Contracting Limited. The contract amount is $834,846 (+HST).
This next phase of the AT Trail includes an asphalt path and replacing the existing sidewalk to enable improved mobility. It will connect with the existing AT trail on West Street, along St. Ninian Street, ending at Church Street. Construction is expected to take eight weeks.
Construction of the Town’s AT Trail is being completed in four sections.
- Phase one was completed in 2024 and runs along West Street from the roundabout at Old Highway 104 to the intersection at Highland Drive.
- Phase two includes the section of the trail from the bridge at the east end of Main Street to the railway tracks in parallel with the Bay Street Project, expected to be done this month.
- Phase three is scheduled to begin this month along West Street and St. Ninian Street.
- Phase four is the last section remaining. The current design will see trail building connecting Church Street to Columbus Field, following the river, coming up through the field and connecting to Main Street by the tennis courts.
This project was first announced June 2021 and is partially funded by the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) with up to $2,987,831.00 in contributions from the federal and provincial governments.

Quote from Mayor Sean Cameron:
“Council approved this phase of the AT Trail as part of our 2026-2027 capital budget. This is one of several significant capital developments council has committed to this year.”
“We deliberately scheduled the work on this phase to avoid overlapping with our other infrastructure projects to minimize traffic disruptions for residents. The timing of all of our projects this year was an important consideration for council.”
