A Note on Traffic Safety Following a Weekend of Celebration

This past weekend, the Town of Antigonish came alive with energy, tradition, and community spirit as we hosted another successful Highland Games. We’re incredibly proud of the volunteers, organizers, athletes, and attendees who made this event such a vibrant showcase of our town.

At the same time, we want to take a moment to speak about something important.

During the Highland Games parade, one of our certified Traffic Control Persons (TCPs) was struck by a vehicle. The driver chose to ignore signage and direction of the TCP, choosing to bypass a barricade, which resulted in injury. While we’re relieved that the TCP’s injury is minor, this incident is unacceptable and could have resulted in serious injury and even death.

Events like the Highland Games show the best of our community. But even in moments of celebration, safety must remain our top priority. Our staff, volunteers, and contractors work hard to ensure roads are managed properly and safely for everyone. When directions are ignored or challenged, the consequences can be serious.

This isn’t about any one event. It’s about a shared responsibility to protect each other.  There are no excuses for reckless behaviour on our streets.

The Town’s Commitment Is Clear: Every incident will be documented. Every incident will be reported. Safety comes first, always. The RCMP were called, and charges have been filed against this driver.

As we head into a season of active roadwork and detours throughout the Town of Antigonish, we ask for your continued cooperation and patience. Whether it's a TCP holding a sign, a detour arrow, or a temporary closure, please respect the guidance provided. These measures are in place to protect all of us.

Let’s continue to show the same respect, care, and pride in our day-to-day interactions that we do when we celebrate together. Because at the end of the day, everyone deserves to return home safe after a day of work.
